Live-Tweeting Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers

So I decided it’d be fun to look back at the very first episode of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. I think the series is still going on but this thing started in 1993 in America. I know Japan started this before then and I even watched a couple of shows (a couple dubbed horribly in Tagalog, too!) in the Philippines.

So let’s see these teenagers save the earth from the evils of Rita Repulsa in the first episode of the Power Rangers! It’s morphinomenal!

My So-Called Life

It’s been a while since I actually wrote anything normal in this beeyotch. And I’m writing this around 3:25 A.M. (which I will set up at 6:30 A.M.) which means that I’m going to keep writing on and on and on since my brain will be having unlimited strange thoughts at this time of day. Night. Whatever. Let’s proceed.

It’s been a roller-coaster life. But I was honestly burned out on writing about the NBA by the time April got here. I have been doing the whole NBA writing thing since December 2008 and it’s not like I don’t take breaks or anything like that; I do. Obviously, I’m take a break during this offseason but I think it was taking on two NBA blogs and managing other people that I wasn’t, I guess, too ready for. I’ll be ready come next season as I know what to expect. It’s a matter of finding time for it also since, ya know, I have other things to do, too. But, first things first, I have to take care of my own site (TNLP) behind-the-scenes. Of course, I can’t say it here but let’s just say that we needed a change since there are so many good NBA blogs now and we have to do something to stay within the pack. I don’t think our blog has regressed per se (I like that Daniel Artest came in and helped out this year) but I don’t think we made as much progress this year than last year when we were on the big blogs constantly and even got to participate in a Complex.Com morsel. I do think the changes we have in store will do us well.

I really don’t have much of a social life. Part of that is, despite my somewhat overconfident persona, I’ve lost confidence in my looks. So I’ve been more active on the workouts in the past three weeks. I’m playing ball again (which I hadn’t done in four months before I played two weeks ago… and the longest break without an injury for about 20 years?). I feel like I can be as athletic as I was when I was 21. Maybe I’m exaggerating. But, man, I was in my best shape ever when I was 28-29. I’d like to reach that point again… but, man, was it so fun to outrun and outgun dudes younger than me when I was working out so much. I lost 28 pounds that year. I pretty much gained it all back. So I’d like to lose 25 pounds again.

Part of the inspiration is that an old friend of mine is on a quest to lose 150 pounds. He finally figured out that he had to lose weight to stay healthy. 10 years ago, he was attempting to lose weight to impress a couple of girls. That didn’t work and he lost complete confidence. He let himself go. Then he ended up ballooning to 370. Why didn’t we tell him earlier? Well, we did… but he just had ‘given up’ so it was no use telling him. It was better he found out on his own. Now that he has, he’s going to try losing that weight now. I am seriously rooting for him.

Anyway, why did I stop working out? I rolled my ankle three years ago. I was on crutches for a month. Then I got used to the lazy lifestyle again. Obviously, writing an NBA blog did not help as I got used to sitting more and more. It also didn’t help that I was afraid of hurting my ankle again when I played ball. I can run fine now.

I’m not going to let injuries stop me from working out. Last Saturday, I woke up with intense knee pain. But I felt no pain when I ran full court later that day. It was a chore getting up from bed for the next few days… but now the pain has lessened when I bend my knee a certain way. And I still did my normal workouts while being careful not to hurt my knee. I’m a little proud of myself.

Wow. I wrote a lot. And I actually got a little bit personal. Maybe it’s time to get a little bit more personal since, well, I’ve already done what I’ve wanted to do: establish myself as a serious NBA writer (well, kinda, sorta) before people find out what weird quirks I have. People pretty much know me for a few things: I write NBA, I call myself some sort of stud, and I like the Spice Girls.

I’ll say this, though: it’ll be a Hot Rey-Rey Summer for 2011.

Live-Tweeting Saved By The Bell

Saved By The Bell is probably the greatest TV show of all-time. It’s so 90′s, it’s cheesy, and most people 35 and under and sane have watched this show. And since I wasn’t live-tweeting a game, I decided that I would live-tweet a random episode!

I collected all them tweets here. The funny thing is that it took me an hour to live-tweet a 20-minute episode! But there was just too much to talk about! I mean, you can’t miss on all the cheese! I actually tweeted more in this episode than the movies I live-tweeted previously.

Anyway, the premise was that Zack Morris is waiting for Kelly Kapowski to ask him out to a “Girl’s Choice Dance.” Of course, there’s this tall, tomboyish, tough girl named Rhonda who wants Zack as well. Hell, every girl wanted Zack. Anyway, here are them tweets and learn your lesson, kids!

Name Change?!

R.R. Magellan.

Why the sudden name change?

It’s actually quite simple: I never really wanted my real name out in public in the first place. Some people know that I had been thinking about this for a while now. I should’ve done this when I first started but… really… I thought I was going to go through this whole time just by using Rey-Rey. That’s the public name I have used on the internet and on previous communities (hello, anime/cosplay community).

But sportswriting/blogging on a more public domain requires me to have a last name. I used my real last name for the past two years but I had been so hesitant about it. I still wanted to go by Rey-Rey as much as possible. And for a while, I couldn’t come up with a good alternate last name.

A few months ago, I was joking with a friend about writing romance novels. I had just finished refreshing myself with the history of the Philippines and when I said that I needed a pen name when I transition to romance novels, I offered the name R.J. Magellan as a joke. I took the name Magellan from Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. He got killed in the Philippines in 1521 and his crew went on to circumnavigate the world. So me being Filipino, there was a little irony in the name.

I thought about it even more in the past couple of weeks. I increasingly got uncomfortable with having my last name out there with all the identity theft issues and wanting to separate more of my private/family life and my conceited public persona out on the internet. So I finally decided to change my public last name to Magellan. I thought it was good enough.

I also decided to go with the initials “R.R.” to look like a total douche bagel. R.R. really only means Rey-Rey. I am in no way changing my first name or nickname in public. Everyone calls me Rey or Rey-Rey. I’m only using the name, R.R. Magellan, when I have to write something sporty in a public domain (like SLAM for instance). Otherwise, I’ll still go by Rey-Rey (or Rey) everywhere else. I’d honestly prefer to just be Rey-Rey the entire time but, again, I needed a last name.

If people want to call me Magellan, that’s fine. To those that know my real last name, I’d prefer that I am not called by that unless I consider them a good friend. But I will answer most to Rey or Rey-Rey. Get used to it.

Oh, well. Either name, I look like a douche bagel. But at least, I didn’t change my name to Swag.

Live-Tweeting Twilight

So in case you missed it… yes, I did live-tweet Twilight. I got very few complaints about it, actually… but it still cracks me up when people complain about it. My thing is… I don’t bother you when you talk about things I’m NOT interested in like… your boyfriend/girlfriend, laundry, your favorite TV show, your undying love for some celebrity you’ll never meet, or the movie you’re watching (IRONY) so why do you bother me when I do this… AND I really do it for humor’s sake. Especially the ones that actually DO know me. They know better not to take me seriously.

You wanna get my real impressions of Twilight, though? I thought it was average. Not my favorite movie and not awesomely bad like SpiceWorld. Kristen Stewart grew on me but I admit that her pictures and her seemingly-emotionless acting bother me. I suppose she’s an acquired taste. My friend has a huge crush on her.

I have this twisted thought of live-tweeting Twilight. There is nothing more entertaining than a 30-something NBA writer tweeting on a Thursday night about a movie that teenage girls love. Wow. That sounds pretty sad.

Rebecca Black Did What Other 13-Year-Olds Would Do

I feel like I have to write about this. In fact, this topic is probably made for me. Everyone knows I’m a wannabee NBA scribe, first and foremost… but people that know me pretty well know that I have an unashamed love for pop music (especially dated pop music). Also… I expect most to disagree with me because most people out there don’t have as high a tolerance as I do when it comes to a lot of things. Some people get annoyed by non-stop tweets, scrolling down web pages, and dogs while I feel the complete opposite. But let’s get to my point.

So everyone knows about 13-year-old Rebecca Black at this point. She sings the song, Friday, which has taken a merciless beating from most people in the internet (I see it quite a bit in social media).

Of course, I made fun of it. Some of the lyrics are decidedly… simplistic. Only some kids in elementary school would be semi-impressed by a singer who decides to spout the days of the week on the breakdown.

I’m not as harsh on the rest of the lyrics. I joke quite a bit about deciding where in the car do I wanna kick it: the front seat or the back seat? I take the back seat 95 percent of the time when there’s three people in the car, by the way. They just decided that Rebecca extend that decision from a split-second to about 5 seconds of a song. And is “I got this, you got this” really that bad? Snoop and Dr. Dre would say, “It’s like this and like that and like this and uh…” They didn’t get ridiculed for it.

The random rapper in the middle of the song is a regular in pop songs (more so back then than it is now). I kinda laughed about it but… I’ll make my point about this guy in a bit.

Also, people that know me know that I don’t like (excessive) autotune. I could tell later on that Rebecca has a decent singing voice and a pretty good voice range. She demonstrated later on in Good Morning, America… and she doesn’t need any autotune.

The video is questionable and awkward. I wish I partied that hard in the 8th grade. And were her friends REALLY driving? Where in the U.S. are you allowed to have a driver’s license at 13? Also… when they were… cruising? Rebecca’s friends were dancing and looked very awkward and uncomfortable. Yes, they’re kids but that doesn’t make it any less awkward and uncomfortable. Then again, that’s probably how I looked, too, when I attempted to dance when I was 21, er, 13.

The random rapper (they didn’t even give his name!) was cruising by himself. He was away from the party. My friend suggested that he didn’t want to get arrested. He was probably right. He looked MUCH older than those adolescents partying. I mean, that would be a creepy situation, ya know?

I do think there are positives here. The song is actually quite catchy despite the simplistic lyrics. Got a good beat and melody going. It’s pretty much what people want and expect in a bubblegum pop song. These days, we don’t hear happy pop music as much so in a way, this is kind of refreshing. And really, I’ve heard much worse than what this 13-year-old girl is singing. I mean, have you heard some of the mainstream hip hop in the past few years? Geez. In any case, because it IS catchy, I’m likely to listen to this more often than not in the next few weeks. Only because it makes me feel good.

Bring it back really quick. The girl is 13 years old. Why so much hate towards the girl? Blame the songwriters if anything but she doesn’t deserve this kind of negative attention.

“But she brought it on herself!”

Let’s put you in her shoes. You’re 13 and you’re very, very impressionable. I’m sure you’d want to do something this potentially awesome at a young age. Would you turn down doing a pop song? Or even some kind of rap? And it can potentially make you lots of cash when, at 13, you think five dollars is a lot of money? I totally would’ve done it. Some 13-year-olds would be smart enough to make the lyrics a bit more sophisticated but most 13-year-olds would just be happy to be on a project and would not go against whatever their record label is saying.

You know what? More power to her. It’s not in my nature for wanting people to fail and it’s not in my nature to hate. It’s just too bad most of the people decide to hate on a 13-year-old when most of ‘em would probably jump on a chance to do something as cool as singing a pop song, rapping, being on a TV show, or hanging out with a celebrity.

And the song really isn’t the worst ever. The worst I can do is just laugh and then leave it alone. Now let me go kick it in the back seat.

I Am The TwitterSlut

I’m a huge advocate of Twitter… and it seems like sports bloggers/reporters/writers and Twitter go hand-in-hand these days.

I’m connected to Twitter pretty much 24/7. On the phone, a laptop, at a PC anywhere… I can be read on Twitter pretty much anytime of the day. If anything amuses me, I will tweet it. I’m not foolish enough to tweet about ANYTHING; I’m not going to put my non-existent lovelife on blast. If I don’t want anyone to know anything about a certain subject, I simply will not speak on it. It’s easy, right?

With that said, a few things bother me about Twitter.

Don’t ask me to follow you on Twitter. There are very few exceptions like if they want a private conversation through Direct Messaging or something. But, dude, I’m not stupid; I know how to push a “FOLLOW” button. I’m a bit lenient (as compared to PRETTY lenient in the past) when it comes to Twitter; more often than not, I will follow. But I won’t follow just because; if anything, I probably should only be following about 500 heads on Twit, not 3,000.

People shouldn’t get angry when I don’t respond back on Twitter. It’s either 1) I miss it completely… or 2) what the hell do I say to your incredibly unfunny statement (but, sometimes, some replies just don’t need a retort)? I face a lot of unfunny people on Twitter. And they also have to realize that I have 4,000+ followers on Twitter; my replies stream will keep moving. It sounds like I’m bragging about it but that’s the truth. Sometimes, I’m not going to bother going through my replies timeline; that’s just a lot to go through.

This might also sound pretty elitist of me but, unless they’re an NBA writer/blogger or NBA-obsessed (I MEAN, obsessed) individual, it’s probably not best to give me something NBA-related news or play that’s about a couple of days old. I’m an NBA blogger and I usually have to keep myself updated on the NBA. There are a few times where I’ll miss a couple of days, of course, but chances are that I’ll know about the news or the play. I love it when some casual fans would give me an article about the Miami Heat that’s like a week old and they’re like, “Did you read this?!” I guess they don’t know how much the Heat is being talked about around NBA circles. I mean, I’m a (wannabee) NBA scribe myself; doesn’t it enter people’s minds that I would have a similar article? But like I said, I have to keep myself in tuned almost at all times.

In any case, I’m pretty easygoing on Twitter. I’m also more likely to follow people who actually interact with me. People really expect me to follow them just because they follow me? What do they have to offer? Ha ha.

My Biggest “Fan”

So a long time ago, when I was doing the whole anime convention thing and my previous blog was much, much more public, some weirdo stopped by my previous blog and acted like he had known me my entire life.

Basically, he acted like he knew me, my then-girlfriend, my then-gf’s roommate, and the roommate’s boyfriend. It was out of nowhere and I had no idea whether to be freaked out or completely amused. As the days went on, I became more and more amused.

He went under the handle Princess Tomoe. “Princess.” Yes. Really.

I guess you could say he was my “biggest fan.” I don’t know. It was just all weird to me.

He stopped by my journal and then my old message board (when everyone used to have message boards). Good thing I saved this on my old journal. Anyway, he basically “invited” us to hang out with him… and then made a schedule. He seriously had an itinerary? This was just… wow…

I really don’t know how else to explain this. He even had a schedule for taking showers. Apparently, it’s 2 1/2 hours long. I mean, take a look more into this schedule…

“Go to Albertson’s.” I guess I go there for all my shopping needs.

“Search for fanfics.” By the way, I’m not big on fanfiction at all but my then-gf was.

“Watch On Demand.” Obviously, that’s what I do every 2:30 A.M.

“Watch Adult Swim.” He doesn’t do a very good job getting info about me. I never, ever watch Adult Swim.

He really meticulously did this? Man, does he (she? it?) really lead an exciting life.

The IP address was traced all the way back to Washington state. This was really comical but, my goodness, was this a strange time.

Next time, some nerd behind a computer tries to be friendly with me, I hope it’s something like this.

AIM: Say What? (Volume 1)

CONFESSION: I save my chat logs from AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Yes, I’m a dinosaur. But I don’t save ‘em for any malicious reasons. I save ‘em because I think they’re hilarious. People know that I’m not mean-spirited; it’s just not my style. I just like to laugh a lot.

I did this on my previous blog (now very private)… but I’m going to bring out this section called AIM: Say What? I seriously think a lot of my favorite conversations came out on AIM. Sober or drunk.

A lot of these were actually from YEARS back. I probably wouldn’t say these things now… what am I talking about? Of course, I would.
